DESIGN FICTION // INTERACTION DESIGN
This project began by identifying an opportunity space within the interactive device field, and I chose to look into backcountry skiing and mountain biking because of my own experiences with trying to use apps like Strava to track my activities. The idea behind GroupShred is a web application that would help outdoor sports enthusiasts unite their activity tracking from several other apps (Nike Fuelband, Strava, etc.) and add their information to a public map accessible by their friends. The app would then also facilitate group meetings and exploration by connecting users based on their shared activities and goals.
I made the video below to demonstrate how this concept could be extended in the future by combining the web app with a smartphone connected to heads-up-display enabled ski goggles.
The second image shows a rough prototype of the web app interface, with the map data divided between different sports (trail running, backcountry skiing, downhill mountain biking, and cross-country mountain biking). This separation of tracking data would allow for the creation of a crowdsourced map of different activities that could be explored by users unfamiliar with a particular area. A further meet-up function is included to help unite users looking to to try out new trails.
